Digital field data capture
Action details
EGT-TWINN project code: A 2.3.3
Official title: Digital field data capture. 5 days classroom/field training.
Date: 30.09 - 04.10.2024
Location: Tallinn (EGT)
Person responsible @EGT: Hando-Laur Habicht
Person responsible @GTK: Tim Kearsey
Summary
Refresher
on digital field data capture systems such as the BGS-SIGMA mobile
system, followed by 2 days of fieldwork in target areas in Estonia, with
practical training in digital field data capture. Return to the office
for 2 days of office-based interpretation and map creation.
Proposed agenda
Day 1 - Show and tell of digital data capture and mapping systems in BGS and EGT
- Morning - BGS shows our current digital data capture system
- Afternoon - EGT shows their current digital data capture system
Note: this part will look at pre-field and in-field processes and the systems used
Day 2 - From field to Map
- Morning - Workshop on BGS' digital mapping workflow and data model to go from Field to final map
- Afternoon - How BGS manages QA and sign-off and how it has evolved
Note: this part will look at the whole data workflow, from capturing the data to developing the digital geological map.
Day 3 - Field day
- BGS & EGT sharing how we use our digital systems in the field
- Sharing BGS's approach to mapping Quaternary deposits in the field (with one of our expert Quaternary mappers)
Day 4 - Future trends and derived datasets
- Morning - How BGS creates datasets from our mapping for engineering, groundwater and insurance industries
- Afternoon- Future trends in mapping e.g. AI, semi-automation
- Wrap up and any next steps
