3D model building from geological data

Action details

EGT-TWINN project code: A 2.2.3
Official title: 3D model building from geological data
Date: 18.11 - 22.11.2024
Location: Tallinn (EGT)

Person responsible @EGT: Hando-Laur Habicht
Person responsible @BGS: Tim Kearsey
Person responsible @GEUS: Florian Smit

Summary

Training in 3D modelling using appropriate software, including model validation, application, and distribution. A 5-day training course will be led by BGS and GEUS with the participation of 4-6 collaborators from EGT, and it will comprise:

  • Overview of the full range of geological 3D modelling software currently deployed by EGT, UKRI and GEUS (including SKUA-GOCAD, PETREL, Groundhog Desktop, LOOP3D, Geoscene3D and Leapfrog3D). A key aim will be to determine the advantages and disadvantages of different 3D geological modelling packages and establish which software will be most suited to the long-term activities of EGT.
  • Discussing methods for model storage, updating, review and integration. Also describing model delivery for specific user communities“.

Proposed agenda

Day 1 - Overview of the full range of geological 3D models built by geological surveys

  • Morning - BGS and GEUS give overviews of the different models built by the different surveys and the data that underpins them.
  • Afternoon - Discussion about the data sets that EGT has to build models and what they want to use models for

Day 2 - 3D modelling software

  • Morning - Overviews of the range of software available to include SKUA-GOCAD, PETREL, Groundhog Desktop, LOOP3D, Geoscene3D and Leapfrog3D (BGS and GEUS)
  • Afternoon - group discussions about which may be the best software for EGT

Day 3 - Storage, databases (e.g. boreholes, seismic) and QA

  • Morning - Examples of how BGS and GEUS digital systems support geological modelling such as borehole databases, Seismic pick stores, model stores and QA systems for models (BGS and GEUS)
  • Afternoon - Opportunity for EGT to get more detail on model support systems

Day 4 - Model delivery of a Geological Survey 3D Modelling community

  • Morning - Model Delivery  (BGS and GEUS). Overview of the wider Geological Survey 3D Modelling community, including GSEU, 3D modelling workshops, EuroGeosurveys and other international communities.
  • Afternoon - Road map for Estonian 3D geology and next steps
