Task 2.2: Transition from 2D mapping to state-of-the-art 3D model building practices
Task leads: UKRI & GTK
Action 2.2.1: Geological databases for seamless 3D geological mapping and modelling (GTK, and UKRI)
Geological databases are essential for the storage and maintenance of the data that will be required for 3D modelling and other scientific work carried out at EGT. In this Action relevant staff from EGT will have the opportunity to learn best practice in development of geological databases and how to store geological data. This work will include:- A 2-day visit for EGT staff to GTK (M6) to introduce GTK workflows and database solutions for bedrock and drill hole observations.
- A 2-day visit for EGT staff to UKRI (M9) to gain insight into UKRI working practices, databases, data pipelines and data extraction with a focus on borehole, field data, and geochemical databases.
- A 3-day training course at EGT covering data modelling, database development, data ingestion and storage, data vocabularies/dictionaries and efficient data pipelines for data retrieval and extraction methods.
Action 2.2.2: Digital workflows and geological data management
Training at UKRI Data management of EGT data for long term use by its scientists will be essential. During this Action we will deliver a 2- day technical workshop, at UKRI, for knowledge exchange on data management policies and procedures, corporate file data stores, data inventories and data management best practice. In addition, the concepts of robust digital workflows and management of data for continuous update and consistent data delivery will be covered.Action 2.2.3: 3D model building from geological data (UKRI & GEUS)
Training in 3D modelling using appropriate software, including model validation, application, and distribution. A 5-day training course will be led by UKRI and GEUS with the participation of 4-6 collaboratorsfrom EGT, and it will comprise:- Overview of the full range of geological 3D modelling software currently deployed by EGT, UKRI and GEUS (including SKUA-GOCAD, PETREL, Groundhog Desktop, LOOP3D, Geoscene3D and Leapfrog3D). A key aim will be to determine the advantages and disadvantages of different 3D geological modelling packages and establish which software will be most suited to the long-term activities of EGT.
- Discussing methods for model storage, updating, review and integration. Also describing model delivery for specific user communities.
