Introduction to geothermal energy and aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) in sedimentary rocks, part 3

4-8. December 2023
Participation is restricted to EGT-TWINN partner organisations
The third part of the EGT-TWINN project action 2.7.1 „Introduction to geothermal energy and aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) in sedimentary rocks“ will be organised on December 4th–8th, 2023 at the EGT Arbavere field research centre in Estonia.
The purpose of this action is to carry out a set of studies on the Ediacaran siliciclastic sequence rocks in three recently drilled drill cores (Jõhvi-1, Kolu-16 and Paldiski-1) which are stored at the Arbavere national drill core storage.
The planned studies involve detailed sedimentological descriptions and sequence stratigraphic interpretations with depositional facies recognition, interpretation of core scanner geochemical data, sampling of siliciclastic rocks for assessment of the rock geothermal parameters (porosity, permeability, thermal conductivity) as well as for SEM mineralogy studies and U-Pb geochronology. The GEUS team coming to Estonia has three geologists with long-standing experience in siliciclastic rocks studies both in Denmark and abroad. The collaborative studies of EGT and GEUS geologists should lead to the preparation and publishing of two joint peer-reviewed papers, fulfilling one of the mandatory requirements of the EGT-TWINN project.
Cored section of the Ediacaran-aged Gdov Formation, showing very interesting sedimentological features that will be further investigated and interpreted within the logging exercise.
