On 10 September 2025, the Geological Survey of Estonia (EGT) hosted colleagues from the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK), the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU), and the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) at the Arbavere Georesources Research Centre. The Nordic & Estonia Surveys Research Day was organised under the clustering objectives of the Horizon Europe EGT-TWINN project and provided a platform for exchanging knowledge, showcasing research facilities, and exploring future collaboration.

Discussing future collaboration possibilities

The day began with an introduction to EGT and the Arbavere centre by Sirli Sipp Kulli, Director of EGT. This was followed by a series of overviews: Jon Engström (GTK), Trond Slagstad (NGU), Niels Schovsbo (GEUS), and Johannes Vind (EGT) each presented the current research priorities and projects of their respective surveys.

After lunch, participants were given a guided tour of the Arbavere drill core facilities led by Heikki Bauert and Johannes Vind, highlighting the extensive core collections and analytical capabilities available on site. The afternoon was dedicated to open discussion, where participants explored opportunities for new joint project proposals and identified areas where collaboration could be deepened.

The meeting brought together:

  • EGT: Heikki Bauert, Sirli Sipp Kulli, Johannes Vind, Tiit Kaasik

  • GTK: Jon Engström, Kathryn Cutts, Daniel Carbajal

  • NGU: Claudia Haase, Trond Slagstad

  • GEUS: Niels Schovsbo

The event concluded with a joint dinner in Tallinn, reinforcing the strong ties between the Nordic and Estonian geological surveys. The day demonstrated the value of face-to-face meetings in strengthening cooperation and set the stage for new initiatives in shared research and development.
